How to replace the float on your Zodiac RIB - complete guide
Replacing the tube on your Zodiac RIB might seem like a daunting task, but with the right preparation, parts, and procedures, you can easily do it yourself. Below, you'll find clear step-by-step instructions specifically for Zodiac RIB models with a stringer/rail system. This guide will help you safely remove the old tube and install the new one perfectly.
1. Prepare new float
Carefully unpack the new float, preferably on a soft surface such as a blanket or a tarp. Inflate the float until its shape becomes visible and it returns to its original shape.
Important for PVC floats:
The slide-in string may be slightly stuck to the float during transport. Carefully loosen it so it can move freely in the rail when you install it.
2. Remove old float
a. Completely remove air
Release all air from the float, leaving the valve inserts depressed. This allows any remaining air to escape during removal.
b. Detach the front
On the bow side there is a flap with which the float is attached to the hull.
Using an Allen wrench, loosen the bolts and store all parts carefully.
Larger Zodiac models may require additional stainless steel plates. Keep these parts as well, as they will be needed for installing the new tube.
c. Loosen the back
At the back, the float is usually attached to a tube holder in the top notch of the hull. Carefully remove this.
d. Remove the float from the rail
Starting from one back, gradually pull the float towards the bow.
Is it difficult? There might be dried dirt between the string and the rail. Loosen this with water or some soapy water.
e. Alternately pulling on both sides
Pull both sides forward slightly alternately for an even movement. This will ensure the tube comes out of the rail without damage.
3. Cleaning the hull rail
Now that the float is removed, thoroughly clean the rail (the notch in the polyester hull). Remove sand, salt, and any old dirt. Then apply soapy water (green soap) to the rail; this will make installing the new float much easier.
4. Prepare new float for mounting
Completely deflate the new float and ensure all valve inserts are open. This will allow the tube to slide more smoothly into the rail and prevent unwanted tension during installation.
5. Prepare the back
There's a small loop on each side of the tube at the back. You can attach a strap or thin string to this loop if desired. This will make it easier to pull the float back into the rail later.
6. Install the new float in the rail
- Place the new float at the front of the boat on a soft surface.
- Start by sliding the tendon into the rail from one side.
- Once one side is fully seated in the rail, repeat this on the other side.
- Pull the float back and forth alternately.
- The last part might be a bit difficult, just pull through calmly without forcing anything.
NB!
Before you pull the float all the way back, the front mounting flap must be reattached to the hull. Then you can pull the tube all the way back.
Installing the tube holder:
At the back, place the tube holder back into the top notch.
Older Zodiac PRO models don't have a tube holder, but rather a mounting flap with a strap. This attaches to the mount on the transom plate.
7. Inflate the new float
Inflate the float according to the correct order and pressure. Always start with the front air chambers. This will automatically position the tube around the hull and prevent wrinkles or tension.
